A systematic analysis revealed that cookie consent practices are essential for regulatory compliance and user trust. Websites must notify users upon first visit, typically through an accessible banner, that cookies are in use. The banner should include clear options: accept, reject, or manage cookie preferences. Results indicate that presenting granular controls—such as for strictly necessary, functional, analytics, and advertising cookies—significantly increases positive user engagement and consent rates. It was observed that the ability to recall or revisit consent choices via a persistent button or widget further enhances user autonomy and transparency.
Best practices also demand that user preferences are remembered for subsequent sessions. Automated systems, such as Consent Management Platforms (CMPs) like CookieYes, were shown to reduce administrative burden while reliably logging consent events, a requirement for legal compliance audits. The results highlight that storing proof of consent and enabling withdrawal of consent at any time are critical for meeting GDPR, LGPD, and POPIA standards.
